IMPORTANT: Information on Minimum Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) at Advanced Legal Training Institute:
Minimum Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) refers to the approved continuing legal education required of California attorneys. Attorneys, including those who are Exempt, are required to submit a Compliance Card to the State Bar to verify that they have complied with their MCLE requirement. To ensure that lawyers receive quality legal education, the State Bar approves MCLE Providers and education activities. California's attorney membership is divided into 3 compliance groups. Compliance periods for the three groups are staggered, so that each group reports compliance in a different year.
Compliance periods are 36 months (3 years) in length. Just prior to the end of a group's compliance period, the State Bar sends compliance cards to those who must comply that year. Reporting deadlines for each compliance group are listed on this page, along with information about the breakdown of the 25-hour education requirement.
- GROUP 1 (A-G)
Period: 2/1/2007-1/31/2010
Deadline: 2/1/2010 - GROUP 2 (H-M)
Period: 2/1/2008 -1/31/2011
Deadline: 2/1/2011 - GROUP 3 (N-Z)
Period: 2/1/2009-1/31/2012
Deadline: 2/1/2012
PLEASE NOTE!
Feb. 1 is the deadline for MCLE compliance and payment of annual bar dues. On Feb. 2, late payments will be assessed a $100 fee for active attorneys and $30 for inactive members. Members of Group 1 (last names beginning with letters A-G) also must submit their MCLE compliance cards online or make sure they are postmarked by Feb. 1. Group 1 members who miss that compliance date will be assessed a $75 late compliance fee beginning on Feb. 2.
MCLE "Regular" Requirement: Total hours required every three years: 25 hours
- Maximum "self-study" hours: 12.5 hours
- Members must fulfill at least one-half of their MCLE requirement with activities approved for "participatory" MCLE credit.
- Special Requirements within the total hours required (may be taken as participatory or self-study):
- Legal Ethics: 4 hours (required)
- Detection & Prevention of Substance Abuse: 1 hour (required)
- Elimination of Bias in the Legal Profession: 1 hour (required)
"What is a "California MCLE Approved Provider"? Is Advanced Legal Training Institute an Approved Provider?"
"California MCLE Approved Providers" are given blanket authorization for a specific period, to offer California MCLE credit for education activities. The education activities must meet the standards for approval in the MCLE Rules and Regulations. Advanced LTI is a Cal Bar Approved Provider (#13751). Approved Providers are not required to submit individual education activities to California for approval.
The State Bar of California adopted a Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) program in 1992. There are 120,500 active licensed attorneys in the state of California. California currently requires 25 hours of CLE credits over 3 years. Attorneys can carry credits over from year to year but not to the next cycle.
MCLE Reporting: Attorney Responsibility
California attorneys are required to report their attendance of CLE classes by using the California Certificate of Attendance form. Credits are posted by state bar identification number or attorney name to individual CLE transcripts, which keep a running total of MCLE credits for a particular year.
Class Accreditation
California bases accreditation on 60 full minutes per hour. This means for every 60 minutes of Advanced Legal Training Institute training, the attorney is accredited 1.0 MCLE credit hours. California does not include in this 60 minutes time for introduction and welcoming remarks. Even though the California MCLE Board grants attorneys one credit hour for each 60 minutes of training, there is a maximum number of credits an attorney can receive for any given class. California will accredit luncheon/dinner speeches. California will give CLE credit for audio and videotapes and in-house training programs. If you participate in the entire Integrated Estate Planning Seminar Series with Advanced Legal Training Institute and review all the self-study materials provided with your fee, you will fulfill your entire 3-year, 25-hour MCLE requirement including legal ethics (12.5 participatory and 12.5 hour self-study package).
